This is island life in the Carolinas! Enjoy true Low Country lifestyle in a spacious ground - level home nestled under beautiful moss draped oaks within an old southern plantation on St. Helena Island. This is a comfortable spacious older home with an open plan suitable for a couple or for a couple of families. There are NO STEPS!! Decor is ""beachy"" and suitable for children. We have a nice large kitchen with Corian tops and a Five Star gas stove with griddle. You'll find everything you need already there except food detergents trash bags and paper goods. Even towels and linens are provided.
This is a very low key environment and is a place you can really relax in. It's on a large lot on a dead end street in a corner of an old plantation. There's lots of room to park several vehicles or boats and you never feel crowded. The neighbors are widely spaced and most are out of view. The live and angel oaks are absolutely georgeous and many are hundreds of years old. Traffic is very minimal in the plantation. We joke that two cars and a horse constitute a traffic jam. The roads are sand and lined with towering oaks you'll see an occasional horseback rider and it is a great place to take a long walk or a bicycle ride. They even filmed some of the movie ""Forrest Gump"" here in the plantation. There is no gate or guard house nor any need for one. Ours is the only house on this creek that is available for rental. The rest are full time residents. Some keep cruising powerboats some cruising sailboats and some fish. Shrimpboats dock right down the creek from us and pass on their way out. If you're out on our dock you can almost shake hands with the captain as they pass by.
All kinds of wildlife make their home in and around the marsh and sound. We regularly see pelicans herons osprey mink otter raccoon and deer and occasionally see a sea turtle or alligator right in the creek. Our new dock is wonderful and has a gazebo on the end with benches chairs and a hammock. There is a nice 30' floating dock to fish or crab from or to moor your boat. We occasionally rent a small boat for creek use to qualified operators. We have very quick access by water to St. Helena Sound and to the ocean for those that want to fish inshore or offshore. We also have excellent access to great shrimping areas off of Morgan Island where monkeys live wild as part of a supervised governmental program. We like to ride by in the boat and watch them. With your own boat you can explore to your heart's content and find your own private beach on an island or sand bar in or around the sound or ocean. We are close by the ICW and would be happy to have your cruising friends stop by.
We encourage you to go to Hunting Island State Park about 5 min by car for your swimming and beachcombing. They have miles and miles of beach a real lighthouse you can go up in bathhouses a museum a nature center with special programs a long fishing pier and a free boatramp. We provide a free pass to the park. The town of Beaufort is about 15 min inland and is a wonderful collection of shops museums art and antique galleries and restaurants right on the Intracoastal Waterway.
The seafood here is second to none! We buy it fresh off the boat out close to the house if we didn't go out that day or just didn't catch any. Sometimes we treat ourselves and just let someone else do it all for us at one of the many excellent restaurants. Some have their boats moored right out back. There is a great waterfront park right downtown with a wonderful playground outdoor music a marina dockage for small cruise ships and lots of special activities. There's even a huge covered free skateboard park nearby for those of us not old enough to know not to challenge the force of gravity. Our family enjoys it here because there is truely something for everyone and you get an opportunity to see and do some things that are really neat and very different from a normal ""beach vacation"". You'll get your time ""on the beach"" and a whole lot more - some of which you probably never even knew existed! That's the part that makes the lowcountry and this place in particular so special!
For those that have a larger group or have a need for other separate bedrooms we do have an attached 2 bedroom 1 bath guest quarters. It opens only to the outside and onto a small deck off the end of the house. We sometimes make it available with the house for an additional fee. The rooms and bath are very small and spartan but have their own central heat and air and have a set of bunkbeds in each room. One set has a double as the lower bunk. The bath has a small shower stall only - no tub. There is standing or sleeping room only in these rooms - no room for chairs or sofa. I use them when I come down alone to clean up or the kids take them when we have a crowd and they want their own space. There is a small dorm refrigerator."
